The Legacy That Comes From Me
What happens when we stop defining ourselves by what came before us and start asking what we want to create from here?
Over the last two episodes, I've been thinking about what it means to be misunderstood by people we love and what happens when the acceptance we've been waiting for may never come.
But eventually, I think the conversation has to turn forward.
During the conversation with my friend that inspired this series, she said something I haven't been able to stop thinking about:
"My focus is the legacy that's coming from me, not the legacy that I came from."
And that completely shifted the question for me.
Because there is value in understanding where we came from. Our families, experiences, and the things we've inherited can tell us so much about who we've become.
But at some point, we also get to ask:
What comes from me?
In this episode of Remember Who You Are, I'm thinking about the difference between building a life in reaction to the past and actually creating a life that reflects what we want.
Because I don't only want to know what I'm ending.
I want to know what I'm beginning.
And maybe legacy isn't some enormous thing we leave behind someday. Maybe we're already creating it through the lives we build, the things we give ourselves permission to do, and what becomes possible because we were here.
In this episode:
• Moving from understanding what you inherited to deciding what you want to create
• Why breaking a pattern isn't the same thing as creating something new
• Building a life from desire instead of defining yourself in opposition to the past
• Choosing what you want to carry forward and what you're ready to put down
• Rethinking legacy as something we're creating while we're alive
• Why legacy doesn't only move through family or blood
• What it means to become the author of what comes next
Maybe we don't need to completely understand everything that came before us before we're allowed to move forward.
We can understand where we came from without making it our destination.
We can carry some things forward and put other things down.
And we can trust that what comes from us gets to be different.
So maybe the final question in this series is:
If I stop waiting for everyone else to understand the life I'm creating, what do I actually want to create?
